Chilanga Town Council Chairperson, Mr. Champion Tembo participated in the World Teachers’ Day Commemoration held at City of Hope Secondary School, under the global theme “Empowering Educators: Strengthening Resilience, Building Sustainability”
In his remarks, Mr. Tembo highlighted government’s commitment to strengthening education through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). He revealed that from 2022 to date, government through CDF has sponsored 245 pupils under secondary school bursaries, delivered over 4,000 desks to schools, constructed six 1×3 classroom blocks, and improved sanitation facilities through new ablution blocks and water reticulation systems.
The Council Chairperson, who is also a former teacher, described the day as significant, praising teachers for the life-changing role they continue to play in the community.
The colourful event was graced by Chilanga Constituency Member of Parliament, Honourable Sipho Hlazo, who served as Guest of Honour.
Honourable Hlazo commended teachers for their tireless efforts in shaping the nation’s future.
He noted that while Chilanga has benefitted from the recruitment of 206 teachers since 2021, the district still has a shortfall of about 250 teachers.
He further highlighted the positive impact of CDF on the education sector, citing the construction of classroom blocks, ablution facilities, the supply of desks and mattresses, and the electrification of schools.
To support the occasion, the MP contributed K30,000 towards the Teachers’ Day celebrations.
Meanwhile, the Acting District Commissioner, Ms. Maureen Chilende said this year’s theme was timely, as education continues to be the backbone of development in the district and the country at large.
She thanked teachers for their dedication and called for continued collaboration between government, parents, and stakeholders to ensure that learners receive quality education in a supportive environment.
The day’s activities began with a march past from Vuma Filling Station and concluded with the presentation of awards to deserving teachers in recognition of their service and contribution to education.
The commemoration was also attended by the District Education Board Secretary, Ms. Lenny Longwe, union representatives, headteachers, and teachers from across the district, who came together to celebrate and honour the invaluable contribution of educators in nation-building.
