Chilanga District has today successfully conducted a District Delimitation Sitting held at Kupark Lodge, during which the majority of stakeholders proposed the creation of two constituencies, namely Lusaka West Constituency and the retention of Chilanga Constituency. The proposed Lusaka West Constituency would have a projected population of 114,938, while Chilanga Constituency would have a population of 112,906.
Under the proposal, Lusaka West Constituency would comprise Mwembeshi, Mondengwa, Nyemba, Namalombwe, Chinyanja, and Kasupe Wards, while Chilanga Constituency would comprise Chilanga, Nakachenje, Kalundu, Chilongolo, New Farms, and Mount Makulu Wards.
Speaking during the meeting, District Electoral Officer Mr. Francis Ndola stated that the District Delimitation Sitting is a significant national exercise being undertaken in all 116 districts of the Republic of Zambia, aimed at ensuring fair and equitable representation in line with population distribution and settlement patterns.
The exercise is being conducted in accordance with the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2025, which introduced major reforms to the country’s electoral system.
Among the key reforms is the increase in constituency-based seats in the National Assembly from 156 to 226, thereby constitutionally mandating the Electoral Commission to create 70 additional constituencies across the country.
The Chilanga District Delimitation Sitting attracted broad stakeholder participation, reflecting the inclusive nature of the process.
Submissions were received from youths, non-governmental organisations, women’s groups, senior citizens, Ward Development Committees (WDCs), councillors, civil servants, the Council Chairperson Mr. Champion Tembo, the Area Member of Parliament Honourable Sipho Hlazo, and a representative of Her Royal Highness the Chieftainess Dr. Nkomeshya Mukamambo II, Princess Cholwe Nkomeshya.
The District Delimitation Sitting provided a structured platform for stakeholders to formally present their views and proposals on how the district should be represented in the National Assembly.
The submissions made during the meeting will form part of the official record to be considered by the relevant authorities in the ongoing delimitation process.
